Introduction

Real2Virtual3D is a collection of programs for creating and viewing 3D photo-real models from photographs, scanned images or drawings. The 3D models created may be viewed using Real2Virtual Viewer, published on web-pages in VRML (Virtual Reality Modelling Language), or exported to other graphics formats.

Modeller

Real2Virtual Modeller is used to define projects. A project is a collection of views of some object you wish to model along with settings which define exactly how the finished object will look.

Each project view shows what the object looks like from a particular viewing direction. Modeller uses two or more views to build a 3D model of the object. You can define a view in one of two ways.

  1. A photograph or scanned image is assigned to the view, you then draw around the outline of the object using Modeller's drawing tools to define the object's shape.
  2. You draw an outline on a 'blank canvas', with no associated image.

Modeller allows you to define single objects, a collection of objects, or a single object made from a collection of simpler parts. Each model part has it's own properties which define how it is shaped, coloured, textured and shaded.

For example to the left is a View containing a photograph of a saw. Outlines of the main parts of the saw have been drawn over the image using Modeller's drawing tools. The model comprises two main parts, the blade and the handle. Both parts are defined using two outlines one for the outside and another for the hole.

To finish describing the saw another view is used, this time a blank canvas describing how the object would look seen from above. Each sub-part is described using a separate outline.

Builder

Real2Virtual Builder takes the project definition and creates a 3D shape model which is compatible with the outlines you have drawn. Builder then paints the model surface using defined colours or 'Texture Maps' it using details from images associated with the project views. Finally the model is saved as a Modeller 3D model, a VRML file, or in another supported format.

Left is the finished model viewed with Real2Virtual Viewer. Texture from the photo in the first view has been mapped to both sides of the model in a process called 'Texture Mirroring'.

Viewer

Real2Virtual Viewer displays finished models in three dimensions allowing it to be inspected from any angle. Views may be saved to Windows Bitmap or JPEG files and used to create animated-GIF images. Images saved using Viewer can also be imported back into Modeller and then used to further refine the model shape.

Right is a non-textured model comprising of six separate sub-parts with their own colour properties. 3D text was generated with Modeller's text tool

Real2Virtual WebView

WebView is technology which enables models to be published on web-pages. WebView supports standard browsers and does not rely on users installing any plug-ins or extensions to their browser. The standard version of webView is free to use.

Right is the saw model presented using WebView. The model was compressed and published using ReduceM3D It is only 14KBytes in size
