Troubleshooting

Below are some common problems that may be encountered. We will add to this list as problems are reported. Please see the section on Feedback.

1.0 The colour of the project images/models does not look correct.
2.0 The viewpoint-cue does not lie over the viewpoint target.
3.0 The builder warns that the model has no vertices.
4.0 The model looks the wrong shape
5.0 When exporting VRML the model is not shown in a VRML viewer.
6.0 The model when viewed does not have any texture
7.0 Modeller warns that there are not enough constraints...

1.0 The colour of the project images/models does not look correct.

Cause : The modeller and viewer both require at least 16-bit colour.  Your  machine if probably using 256 colours or less.

Solution : Use the windows control panel to select a higher colour display resolution.  It may be necessary to upgrade your machine if this is not possible.

2.0  The viewpoint-cue does not lie over the viewpoint target

Cause : Badly placed cue points, or incorrectly specified camera parameters.

Solution : Use a higher magnification when placing the cue points, enable the improve viewpoint cue option.  Ensure the camera settings are correct by calibrating the camera.

3.0 The builder warns that the model has no vertices.

Cause : There is no point which lies in all participating viewpoints, so the program infers that the complete space is empty.

Solution : Check any manually entered viewpoints, it is easy to make a mistake and define a viewpoint looking in the wrong direction.

4.0 The model looks the wrong shape

Cause : The viewing positions were not well chosen and/or further views are required.

Solution : Find a viewpoint from which the model looks incorrect and take an image from this viewpoint, or alternatively use the viewer to save an image from this viewpoint.  Load the image and include in the project.  Repeat the refinement process as necessary.  See the section on model refinement using simulated views.

5.0 When exporting VRML the model is not shown in a VRML viewer.

Cause : You may not have a VRML viewer installed.

Solution : Check on the Program->Settings Build page, make sure that Launch a VRML viewer .. is selected. If it is then you do not have a viewer installed. See the section on enabling VRML in your browser.

6.0 The model when viewed does not have any texture

Cause : Texture is not enabled or the image files used are too large for the specification of machine that you are using.

Solution : Check that the model settings are set to Uniform Texture or Texture Map . If you have used Groups check that this is set for each group you wish to be textured. If no texture is still seen then reduce the resolution of the images you are using by editing them in a photo-editor. At least 64mb of ram is recommended when using Modeller.

7.0 Modeller warns that there are not enough constraints to calculate a viewpoint

Cause : Modeller uses silhouettes when calculating view positions from viewing directions. If a view does not contain enough silhouettes in groups that are described in other views this is not possible.

Solution : Put a rectangular region around the silhouettes in the problem view, look at the silhouette properties - make sure this is in group 0 and that "Use silhouette for shape" is deselected. Modeller will then align this view based on the bounding rectangle.
